Growing up, I was considered a healthy child. I rarely went to the doctor and wasn’t on any long-term medications. Then, at age 16, I began having health problems. I didn’t know what I had. I only knew something was very wrong.
It took 13 years for all of the pieces of the puzzle to come together. But I now know that I actually had 3 different illnesses each from separate categories of illness an autoimmune disease, an environmental illness, and a psychosomatic illness. The symptoms of all 3 illnesses overlapped and, unfortunately, in 1999 all 3 were not yet recognized by modern medicine.
Over an 11 year time span, I exhausted all of my options available in modern medicine but could not get relief. Instead my health deteriorated year after year. I was very sick and experiencing symptoms from Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), Gastroparesis, a Hiatal Hernia, Toxic Mold Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), and Mind Body Syndrome.
I had always been sensitive to medications, but my sensitivities had increased to a point where introducing new medications would do more harm than good because of the negative side effects I would experience.
I had developed so many food and environmental allergies that I was essentially reacting to everything in my environment either allergically or chemically. I needed a reset button for my immune system. Also, I needed a treatment that would not require me to take any medications or supplements. But I had never tried an alternative treatment before and did not know where to look.
In nothing short of a direct answer to prayer, I was led to someone who introduced me to Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (N.A.E.T.). NAET combines methods from applied kinesiology, chiropractic medicine, acupressure, and acupuncture to alleviate allergies of all types. Most importantly for me, NAET did not require me to take any medications or supplements!
I arrived at my first NAET appointment eager for healing, but doing my best to keep my hopes in check. My acupuncturist was straightforward with me that she couldn’t guarantee any results from NAET. Thankfully, though, the results I got from doing NAET treatments far exceeded anything I could have hoped for. While not a cure, NAET helped bring the symptoms of all 3 of my illnesses under control! The first NAET treatment brings your brain and body into balance. And after that treatment, for the first time in 12 years I felt my body begin to heal!
NAET was a long process but well worth it to experience the relief the treatments provided. I’ll try and explain briefly how NAET helped with each illness:
Eosinophilic Esophagitis is a rare autoimmune disease that involves food and environmental allergies. White blood cells (called Eosinophils) are present in the tissue of the esophagus that mistake your food for a foreign invader and attack. EoE also causes ridges/furrows to form in your esophagus that make it hard (and extremely painful) for food to pass through.
I developed Gastroparesis and a Hiatal Hernia along with EoE. Gastroparesis, also known as Delayed Gastric Emptying, is a condition where your stomach function is slowed and food is not effectively pumped out of your stomach. My allergic symptoms ranged from throat swelling, nasal swelling, increased heart rate, breathing difficulties, overheating, and flushing of skin to vomiting, diarrhea, acid reflux and intense esophageal pain. Because of delayed stomach emptying, my food would sit in my stomach for hours and I couldn’t move without experiencing pain, nausea, and reflux.
Two different specialists told me that it was time to give up solid food. I was frightened because I knew that if the liquid diet I was prescribed (which included juices of foods I knew I would have reactions to) didn’t work, the next recommendation would likely be a permanent feeding tube. But to my amazement, one by one, each NAET treatment successfully eliminated my allergic symptoms to each allergen or group of allergens being treated! Additionally, NAET greatly improved my stomach function.
I will never forget after that first NAET appointment, my dog asked to go outside only an hour and a half or so after I had finished eating. Because my food usually would not have digested in this amount of time, I braced myself for the feeling in my stomach an EoE friend so aptly described as a wet bag of cement. But when I stood up, that feeling wasn’t there!! My stomach was emptying!!!
I went on to complete the 15 NAET Basics and then additional treatments after that for allergens such as dyes, additives, preservatives, cigarettes, perfumes, cleaners, etc. Thanks to the effectiveness of the NAET treatments, I never had to give up solid foods and was also able to add back in foods that I had previously reacted to. I have not had an allergic reaction in over a year!
While NAET is not a cure for EoE, NAET treatments did successfully alleviate the symptoms of my allergic reactions and decreased the pain in my esophagus. This took a serious illness from being nearly unmanageable to being well-managed.
While NAET treatments were bringing my EoE under control, the relief they brought from allergic symptoms actually led to the discovery of another illness Toxic Mold Syndrome.
As I said earlier, I suffered from both allergic reactions and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. However, many of those symptoms overlapped or were extremely similar. So prior to doing NAET treatments it was often hard to tell whether I was experiencing only allergic symptoms, only chemical symptoms, or (as was usually the case) a combination of both.
As the NAET treatments eliminated my allergic symptoms, I knew that what was left were symptoms of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. And those symptoms were intensifying. But I did not know why. As time went on, I noticed that my symptoms of MCS were MUCH worse when I was at home than when I was out. Some of the symptoms were brain fog, fatigue, nasal congestion, breathing problems, twitching, nausea, and burning in my throat.
I told my acupuncturist what was going on and she said that my symptoms were consistent with toxic mold exposure and that I should investigate my home for mold. Long story short, I discovered that there had been a leak in a pipe behind a wall and Stachybotrys (toxic mold) had developed. The diagnosis of Toxic Mold Syndrome was a surprise benefit of NAET, but one that revealed an important piece of my health puzzle.
Moving out of the mold alleviated the majority of my symptoms. But I do believe the NAET treatments were instrumental not only in the discovery of the mold but also in my recovery from Toxic Mold Syndrome because of how they strengthened my immune system and unlocked my body’s natural healing mechanisms. I now experience only minor symptoms of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. For example, in recent months, my apartment building was pressure washed using a bleach solution and I experienced NO MCS symptoms!!
The last piece of the puzzle to be put into place was actually most likely the first illness I developed. Mind Body Syndrome is a Central Nervous System processing disorder where deep, unresolved emotions cause real, physical symptoms in the body (e.g. pain). Mind Body Syndrome is too complex to attempt to explain briefly. Working with a counselor who uses a technique called Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT) was essential in my recovery from Mind Body Syndrome. In combination with RRT, the NAET emotional treatments were effective in helping my body be able to properly process my emotions and extremely effective in breaking the connection between an emotion or memory and its corresponding physical symptoms.
So, as you can see, NAET treatments were a crucial part of my recovery from all 3 illnesses. I am still in the recovery process, but I am experiencing a level of health today that in years past I honestly would not have thought truly possible.
“…but those who wait for the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31-32
