Step 1: Lungs and Nose
Indoor air can be made toxic by every paint, adhesive, carpet, upholstery, manufactured wood product, copy machine, pesticide, perfume, nail polish, hair spray, dryer sheets and cleaning agent.
Other things that can be in our air: cigarette smoke, second hand smoke, gas and wood biproducts, some light bulbs can leak mercury, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, VOCs, toxic mold, mycotoxins, bacteria, viruses and pollen.
The average adult at rest inhales and exhales something like 7 or 8 liters of air per minute. That totals about like 11,000 liters of air in a day.
In 1984, the World Health Organization estimated that 30% of new and remodeled buildings worldwide have significant indoor air quality problems. In 1995, the EPA said 50% of schools had poor air inside the buildings.
Clean indoor air is step one. My son was sick for a year. We tried the pharmaceutical route, treating Lyme and coinfections with antibiotics. Nothing was working. He only got worse. He was getting sicker by the day and no doctor could tell us why.
After 9 months and many failed doctor's visits, we discovered, it was our indoor air in our own home.
We tested, using a combination of dust and air testing and found out that we were living in toxic mold.
We couldn't see it, we couldn't smell it.
My son was very sick. Seizures, throwing up, passing out, massive weight loss and and MRI showed lesions on the brain. He tested positive for Lyme, Bartonella, Mycoplasma, EBV, Babesia, strep and more. But an infectious disease doctor wanted to admit him to the hospital for “depression.” Over my dead body. He was TEN years old – he was NOT depressed BEFORE he got sick. Sure he looked sad. He was SICK.
I was not well either. I had been throwing up daily for almost FOUR YEARS and not one doctor had found a cause. Over 20 years, I had been diagnosed with multiple bogus “diseases” – fibromyalgia, bulimia, cysts on my ovaries, chronic reactive arthritis and finally, when I was throwing up every 3 minutes – sphincter of oddi – a rare phenomenon where surgery is only 50/50.
Between my son and I, we had seen dozens of doctors and not one had mentioned that our air might be making us sick.
My daughter had allergies and asthma… she had it since birth… and it was SEVERE. She was on 4 medications and hospitalized 1-2 times a year on average. You would think the asthma doctor would say – test your air. No. It's hereditary – when we moved out – she got better with natural treatments and got OFF all FIVE of her medications.
The most popular diagnosis was “It's All in Your Head.” We had seen gastroenterologists, internal medicine doctors, infectious disease doctors, dermatologists, neurologists, kinesiologists, pulmonologists and Lyme Literate Doctors.
Never ONCE — did anyone SUGGEST — to TEST THE AIR! As a matter of fact – the I called the health department on 3 separate occasions looking for help because I was sure we were sick from our environment because my dog had similar symptoms as my son (seizures, throwing up and not able to walk).
Our bad indoor air quality was literally killing us. Now I know, there are simple air quality tests every home owner, land owner and building owner should do if anyone is sick. There are simple blood tests every sick person should do if they suspect indoor air quality to be making them sick.
We have tested hundreds of homes since then and very few are safe to live in! The only homes I know of that are safe are pro-actively purifying their air. Furnace filters, HEPA filters, UV and air exchange are not enough these days. Every home is constantly being exposed to outdoor air, bacteria, fungi, viruses and even VOC's and formaldehyde.

When we were made sick by toxic mold, it took us over 4 years to figure out the air in our home was making us sick. We were living in mold in another building before that. Mold illness and all toxin build-up in the body is cumulative and can appear like sudden illness.
By the time we figured out our air was toxic, we were thoroughly poisoned.
We did a remediation – and are able to live without fear of mold and other indoor air contaminants.
Did you know that in 1999, Mayo Clinic did a study that says 96% of sinus infections are fungal related? Why in the heck to most doctors prescribe antibiotics for something fungal related?
In 2011, when we first figured out mold was making us sick, one of my favorite doctors did a phone conference where he said a netipot with baking soda, sea salt and xylitol was clearing mold in the nose better than some prescriptions.
We also used natural antifungals in a nebulizer. For more on clearing the nose and lungs of toxic mold – see this post: Allergies and Asthma Disappear
Step 2: Blood, Nasal & Breathing
This is symptom relief time. We are starting with basics.
Sop up circulating toxins with binders. If you are not feeling good – it's likely you have toxins circulating in your blood. My favorite binders are powdered zeolite, Great Plains Bentonite Clay and Activated Charcoal. Take binders 2 hours away from food or supplements because not only do they mop up the bad stuff, but they will steal the nutrients from food and supplements too.
Make sure you are drinking plenty of water! Put some lemon or baking soda in your water (depending on your pH)
If you have ever had sinus infections or you are prone to headaches – you should clear your nasal passages using a neti pot or some other nasal irrigation. If you skip this step, you may continue to re-infect yourself with whatever you have stuck up there. If you are sick from indoor air pollution – assume you have to clear the nose! You breathe, don't you?
If you are having trouble breathing, clear the lungs. If you feel there is a breathing problem, find something natural to nebulize. I have nebulized several natural things: baking soda, sea salt, Argentyn 23, grapefruit seed extract, and xylitol. If you are nebulizing a powder, mix it with purified or distilled water. 🙂
Step 3: Kidneys
In order for the body to be able to clear these toxins through urine, the kidneys need to be working. If you have frequent UTI's, trouble urinating or you have lower back pain, you need to work on your kidneys. I like Solidago #5 for this – it is a liquid that you add to water. Start slow and ramp up. Start with one drop in 8 oz of water and work your way up (as tolerated) to 100 drops per day.
- Stinging Nettle Tea
- Cranberry Juice
- Lemon Water
- Coconut Water
- Apple Cider Vinegar
Step 4: Liver
I had right side pain just below the rib cage, high ALT and AST which are part of the liver panel… so my liver was clogged. The pain and the testing confirmed there was a problem.
LiverLife by BioRay Natural was a great tool for us when we were very toxic. We had to start very slow 1/2 drop in 8 ounces of water and sip slowly. When there was no change in symptoms from this low dosage we ramped up slowly until we could tolerate 30 drops, twice daily with no discomfort.
Once I was able to do a full 30 drops of LiverLife, I did the Hulda Clark Liver Cleanse
Step 5: Gut – Stomach
Many of us have low HCL – a good way to test this is to perform this test: mix one quarter teaspoon of baking soda in eight ounces of cold water, first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything except water. Drink the baking soda solution. Time how long it takes to belch. Time up to five minutes. If you have not belched within five minutes stop timing anyway.
If your stomach is producing adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid you should probably belch within two to three minutes. Early and repeated belching may be due to excessive stomach acid. Belching results from the acid and baking soda reacting to form carbon dioxide gas.” ~ Dr. Debe
We supplemented anywhere from 1-5 Betaine HCL capsules after each meal.
Sometimes, we would take digestive enzymes 30 minutes before meals.
Probiotics are another way to help the gut — especially if you have ever taken antibiotics in the past. Antibiotics strip our guts of the good bacteria that helps us digest food. When purchasing probiotics, it is best to get a probiotic that needs refrigeration as these are live. We have used VSL-DS for a long time – avaiable by prescription only.
Step 6: Intestines – Large and Small
I did coffee enemas 3-5 times a week for over a year. If you are going to do this, I suggest getting a stainless steel enema kit. My body was overburdened with a poisoning from a toxic mold house and I was sensitive to everything and I felt better after a CE – so there was an immediate reward.
The intestines are damaged and in need of repair if you have ever eaten non orgainic food. GMO foods are designed to explode bugs — and they are blowing holes in our intestines and causing leaky gut. I found a supplement that is helping to heal the intestines – it is called – Oxy-Powder. It was developed for use with Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Step 7: Brain
Last, but not least, we worked on detoxing the brain. Detoxing the brain can be difficult and potentially dangerous because we don't want to stir up toxins and recirculate or add toxins to the already burdened brain. Our liver and our brain are our 2 fattiest organs and toxins love to store themselves in fat!
Brain fog and memory problems were some of the worst symptoms I got from toxic overload. Detoxing will clear the body and clear the mind. There are only certain supplements that will cross the blood brain barrier and great care should be taken when using these supplements.
I suggest you read “Amalgam Illness” by Andrew Hall Cutler and follow the round the clock oral chelation detox protocol he outlines in that book. DMSA and ALA are the two chelators — but there are other supplements you need to be taking and specific instructions for taking these supplements.
I have written a couple other blogs where I talk about “Amalgam Illness” and go into details of where to buy the book and receive online support. Mercury Poisoning Detox & Amalgams (silver fillings) and Mercury
If Someone is Not Getting Well With Lyme Disease Treatment – consider heavy metals – this blog goes into detail on a sauna detox and also a round the clock oral chelation detox we did and it helped us to get well.
One thing, I am not sure if I ever blogged about is Hydergine or Ergoloid Mesylates. This is a Nootropic that protects the brain, lifts symptoms of depression and helps with memory and brain function. My son and I both took this while we were detoxing heavy metals and other toxins from the brain and it boosted our mood and our intelligence. 🙂
You may be able to get a friendly doctor to write you a prescription for Hydergine and make sure you know the other name for it is Ergoloid Mesylates because I can't remember which one our doctor found it under. It is an Alzheimer's drug – so make sure you tell them you have symptoms that are similar to Alzheimer's. I know when we were suffering with severe poisoning from environmental toxins, the brain symptoms were the worst symptoms and they were very similar to dementia.
Is the Order Absolute?
This worked for us – so of course I think it is the best way. Some things were done in this order for reasons that made sense to us at the time. Stop the poisoning, allow the body to detox.
My way is not the only way.
We did do mostly natural treatments and much better because of it.
We could always be healthier. Now that I know about health, I am always working on my own!
We did so much more than just what is on this page! Do what makes you feel best. Consult with a doctor if you have one. If you don't have a doctor you can trust, don't let that stop you from healing! We did not have a doctor most of the time… and we still took steps to get well!
Keep focusing on the fact that you are healing. Don't focus on the sickness. Don't ever own the symptoms. Don't say, “my migraine”, “my MS” or “my Lyme Disease”… you are fearfully and wonderfully made and if you are open to healing you will be whole and healthy.
The book, “The Science of Being Well” is available free on Amazon and I found it very helpful in training the brain to allow the body to be healthy.
